A Whale Of A Problem: Town Faces Threat Of Exploding Carcass

Blue whale carcass raises a stink in Newfoundland

Yes, Beached Whales Really Do Explode

I like history, but not this much:

A Brief History of Exploding Whales

"It happens! Pretty often, actually. And the results are ... really, really gross."
[---]
"Jack Lawson, a scientist affiliated with the Canadian fisheries department, told the media that his main concern was neither the stench nor the possibility of an explosion. He warned that the worst thing would be for a person to get too close to the whale and fall inside it: “The [whale] skin is starting to lose its integrity and if someone were to walk along, say, the chin — that is full of all that gas — they could fall in the whale. The insides will be liquefied. Retrieving them would be very difficult.""

Proving Once Again, You...

...find the craziest stuff on Facebook:

"Two Middle East mothers are sitting in a cafe chatting over a plate of
tabouli and a pint of goat's milk.
The older of the two pulls a small folder out of her handbag and starts
flipping through photos. They start reminiscing.
''This is my oldest son, Mujibar. He would have been 24 years old now.''

''Yes, I remember him as a baby.'' says the other mother cheerfully.
"He's a martyr now though." the mother confides.
"Oh, so sad dear...'' says the other.
''And this is my second son, Khalid. He would have been 21.''
''Oh, I remember him,'' says the other happily, ''he had such curly hair
when he was born.''
''He's a martyr too...'' says the mother quietly.
''Oh, gracious me...'' says the other.
''And this is my third son. My baby. My beautiful Ahmed. He would have been
18'', she whispers.
"Yes," says the friend enthusiastically, ''I remember when he first started
school...''
''He's a martyr also,'' says the mother, with tears in her eyes.
After a pause and a deep sigh, the second Muslim mother looks wistfully at
the photographs and, searching for the right words, says . . .
"They blow up so fast, don't they?""

CBC union wants taxpayers to pay more

Will you look at that survey result? The question asked is "Is the CBC worth a tax increase?". Of course, this isn't a random survey, so the distribution may be unreliable, but still, a random survey would no doubt garner a similar distribution of answers.

94% say NO. Only 5% say yes and 1% say maybe. Even if you throw the maybes in with the yeses, that still leaves a resounding 94% of us who do not want to feed the beast. It's hard to imagine a truly random survey would yield the opposite result, with a large majority wanting to continue funding the thing. Faster, please.

And so is this:

Sun Flatlining Into Grand Minimum, Says Solar Physicist
"With each passing season, the weather seems stranger and more extreme.

Who can argue with a sudden outbreak of the “polar vortex” phenomenon; unprecedented winter drought in California; and summer temperatures so torrid Down Under that even play at the Australian Open was briefly halted?

Is any of this connected to the sun’s drastically diminished recent sunspot cycles?"
[---]
"Weather isn’t climate, but circumstantial evidence indicates our sun may be entering a grand minimum of sunspot activity, not unlike the Maunder Minimum that some climatologists think caused record low winter temperatures in Northern Europe during the latter half of the 17th century.

“My opinion is that we are heading into a Maunder Minimum,” said Mark Giampapa, a solar physicist at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in Tucson, Arizona. “I’m seeing a continuation in the decline of the sunspots’ mean magnetic field strengths and a weakening of the polar magnetic fields and subsurface flows.”"

Three Guesses...

Doom And Gloom Is Not New - Just Boring

Predictions from Earth Day, 1970:

1. "CIVILIZATION WILL END within 15 to 30 years, unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind."
— Harvard biologist George Wald

2. "Most of the people who are going to die in THE GREATEST CATACLYSM IN THE HISTORY OF MAN have already been born… [BY 1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into FAMINES OF UNBELIEVABLE PROPORTIONS. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s."
— Paul Ehrlich

3. "IT IS ALREADY TOO LATE TO AVOID MASS STARVATION."
— Denis Hayes, Chief organizer for Earth Day

4. "Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975, widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions…. BY THE YEAR 2000 -- thirty years from now -- THE ENTIRE WORLD, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, WILL BE IN FAMINE."
— North Texas State University professor Peter Gunter

5. "In a decade, URBAN DWELLERS WILL HAVE TO WEAR GAS MASKS to survive air pollution… By 1985, air pollution will have REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT REACHING EARTH BY ONE HALF."
— Life magazine

6. "At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it's only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and NONE OF OUR LAND WILL BE USABLE."
— Ecologist Kenneth Watt

7. "Air pollution...is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone."
— Paul Ehrlich

8. "BY THE YEAR 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate… that THERE WON'T BE ANY MORE CRUDE OIL. You'll drive up to the pump and say, ‘Fill 'er up, buddy,' and he'll say, ‘I am very sorry, there isn't any.'"
— Ecologist Kenneth Watt

9. "[One] theory assumes that the earth's cloud cover will continue to thicken as more dust, fumes, and water vapor are belched into the atmosphere by industrial smokestacks and jet planes. Screened from the
sun's heat, the planet will cool, the water vapor will fall and freeze, and A NEW ICE AGE WILL BE BORN."
— Newsweek magazine

10. "The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age."
— Kenneth Watt

Round-Up

Manitoba chiefs say province doesn't have right to know about reserve children
"Manitoba's top aboriginal leaders say the province doesn't have the right to know about or track children seized by child welfare agencies on reserves.

Creating a centralized system that tracks all children receiving protection services was a key recommendation from a recent inquiry into the death of Phoenix Sinclair, a five-year-old who fell through the cracks of the child welfare system and was murdered by her mother and mother's boyfriend.

But Grand Chief Derek Nepinak, head of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, said the provincial government is continuing the legacy of the residential school system by unilaterally taking charge of aboriginal children."

TransCanada CEO expresses frustration over latest Keystone delay
"The initial deadline was early May. The department didn't provide a new deadline.

"Canadian oil will make its way to market with or without Keystone XL," Girling said. "We are extremely disappointed and frustrated with yet another delay. American men and women will miss out on another construction season where they could have worked to build Keystone XL and provided for their families.""
[---]

My view: Anti-science ruins the climate debate
"We have become accustomed to politicians, environmentalists and alternative energy companies telling us that the science of climate change is "settled." Scientists supposedly know with certainty that our carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are causing a climate crisis. There is no need to further investigate the validity of the theory or to consider alternative evidence. We need not even consider whether adaption to climate change is more effective than trying to prevent it. We are told that we must take action to stop the unfolding human-caused climate catastrophe, no matter the cost.

Professors Chris Essex (University of Western Ontario) and Ross McKitrick (University of Guelph) call this the Doctrine of Certainty. In their award-winning book “Taken by Storm,” they explain, “The Doctrine is a collection of now-familiar assertions made about climate, all of which must be accepted without question.

If one dares question the Doctrine, the reaction from true believers is immediate — you are a denier, an enemy of nature, a pawn of big oil and you must be silenced. As demonstrated last month when activists protested in front of Washington Post headquarters brandishing an open letter signed by 110,000 people demanding that the paper not publish Charles Krauthammer’s skeptical opinion piece, censorship is fair play if you are on the side of the angels. The possibility that, as Essex and McKitrick say, “The Doctrine is not true. Each assertion is either manifestly false or the claim to know is false,” is not even considered.”"
I must get that book: Taken by Storm

Earth’s extinction rate highly exaggerated
"“---human-altered landscapes can foster more biological diversity than we anticipated,” Hadly said.

The researchers now point to an alternative framework that promises a more effective way of accounting for human-altered landscapes and assessing ecological risks."

Global Weirding

Moore Equals Less in Global Warming Denial
"'There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth's atmosphere over the past 100 years.'

That statement is from Senate testimony from Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore, a scientist himself, albeit one in the consulting business these days. The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change would beg to differ."
[--]
"Moore takes direct aim at the methodology behind the IPCC findings. Rather than measurable proof, he said, the scientists are relying on computer models, which are only as accurate as their human programmers.

"We may think it sophisticated, but we cannot predict the future with a computer model any more than we can make predictions with crystal balls, throwing bones, or by appealing to the gods," he said in his written testimony in February."
[---]
"Moore doesn't dispute that the world is warming. Global warming, he said, is a good thing. Don't worry. Be happy.

[H]umans are a tropical species. We evolved at the equator in a climate where freezing weather did not exist. The only reasons we can survive these cold climates are fire, clothing, and housing. It could be said that frost and ice are the enemies of life, except for those relatively few species that have evolved to adapt to freezing temperatures during this Pleistocene Ice Age. It is "extremely likely" that a warmer temperature than today's would be far better than a cooler one.

Presumably, we will enjoy longer summers at whatever is left of the beach. An open shipping channel across the Arctic Sea. Bikinis as formal wear. A bigger market for sunscreen. The benefits boggle the mind."
Notice that old canard about "open shipping lanes" in the Arctic. The warmanistas are sooo ignorant of both planetary and human history.

Scientific/Academic Fraud

Manipulating Information To Overstate Global Warming
"Exaggerating the degree and impact of climate change has been part of the global warming alarmists' strategy. Now it seems even academics are doing it, publishing a paper that provides a "rationale" for lying.

Stirring up fear over man-made global warming isn't a new approach for the alarmists. Years ago many said it was acceptable to embellish global warming and its effects. After all, the public doesn't get it, and it's for their own good.

Fuhai Hong and Xiaojian Zhao, economics professors at Asian universities, recently published a paper titled "Information Manipulation and Climate Agreements," in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.

Was this a handbook for twisting the truth? In their abstract, Hong and Zhao note that "it appears that news media and some pro-environmental organizations have the tendency to accentuate or even exaggerate the damage caused by climate change." But rather than try to introduce facts and get the science right, they appear to come to the aid of the exaggerators.

"This article," they write, "provides a rationale for this tendency. ... We find that the information manipulation has an instrumental value."

Hong and Zhao say their paper has been misrepresented by the media. In an explanation they sent to food and agriculture economist Jayson Lusk, who last month "raised some questions about the ultimate desirability of information manipulation," the authors say they were looking at media bias in two ways: one, why it exists; two, what its outcome is.

In a note to the press, the authors vow that "we never advocate lying on climate change."

But as Lusk noted in an earlier comment on the paper, the authors constructed "a mathematical model to suggest that exaggerating consequences can have positive impacts by getting people to 'do the right thing.'"

There's also this statement: "Our key result — that overpessimism alleviates the underparticipation problem — implies that the propaganda of climate skepticism may be detrimental to the society."

So maybe they would "never advocate lying on climate change," yet they approve of using propaganda and silencing or marginalizing skeptics?

At least they're not in favor of, as far as we know, arresting global warming skeptics. That can't be said of some, including journalist Adam Weinstein and assistant philosophy professor Lawrence Torcello.

But these two should be a reminder: The growing extremism is a sign that the global warming/climate change scare is losing its strength."

Thieves can’t crack Barrie shop safe, make off with $15K in hair-removal products
"Police say thieves who broke into a business in Barrie, Ont., stripped it of $15,000 worth of hair-removal products after they failed to crack the store’s safe.

Investigators say that before the store was broken into it’s believed the burglars cut the power, which disabled the alarm system.

The thieves then cut a hole in the building’s rear wall, and once inside they failed to pry open the store’s safe.

They then got into the store’s display area and grabbed the hair-removal products before fleeing."

Hilarious!!

""An atheist was walking through the woods.

‘What majestic trees!'
‘What powerful rivers!'
‘What beautiful animals!' he said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him.
He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.

He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again and the bear was even closer.

He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him…

At that instant, the Atheist cried out, ‘Oh my God!’

Time Stopped.
The bear froze.
The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky.

‘You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don’t exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident.’
‘Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament?'
'Am I to count you as a believer?'

The atheist looked directly into the light, ‘It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a
Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian’?

‘Very well,’ said the voice.

The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke:

‘For what I am about to receive, may the Lord make me truly thankful, Amen.’"

Going Down

Hong Kong economists say it's not a a good idea to lie about global warming… it’s a GREAT idea
"How many people in doomsday cults really believe what they’re saying? How many of them really think the end is nigh? How many of them are just preying on the weak and lonely, tweaking their fears to keep them in line?

When it comes to the doomsday cult called “global warming,” it’s becoming increasingly obvious that the hucksters are in charge."
[---]
"A new peer-reviewed paper...is openly providing a “rationale” for global warming proponents to engage in mendacious claims in order to further their cause.

The paper appears to support or provide a formula for why lying or “information manipulation” is able to further the cause of man-made global warming and “enhance global welfare.” The authors use a mathematical formula to study information tactics.

The authors, Assistant Professors of Economics Fuhai Hong and Xiaojian Zhao, note how the media and environmental groups “exaggerate” global warming and then the offer their paper to “provide a rationale for this tendency” to exaggerate for the good of the cause."

Game Over?

Surprising admission by U.N. climate chief
"With contrary evidence increasingly prompting many scientists to distance themselves from alarmist predictions, the United Nations climate panel’s latest report warning that climate change will lead to war, famine and extreme weather that could result in the extinction of human beings shows the periodic reports are more about politics than science, charges a watchdog."
[--]
"Marc Morano, editor of ClimateDepot.com, noted that the panel’s chairman, Rajendra K. Pachauri, admitted in an interview last September with the London Guardian that the purpose of the periodic U.N. climate report was to make the case that “action is needed on climate change.”

“Top United Nations officials apparently knew years in advance exactly what this new U.N. climate report was going to say,” Morano said. “The U.N. IPCC is guilty of nothing short of making the science fit their political agenda.”

At a press conference in Yokohama, Japan, March 25, Pachauri released the U.N. panel’s fifth climate assessment, which concludes a continued rise in carbon dioxide levels in the earth’s atmosphere threatens the fundamental systems that support human civilization, to the extent “no one will be untouched.”
[---]
"Morano pointed out that U.N. officials were predicting as far back as 2009 that their next climate warning would return to being alarmist, in the spirit of Al Gore’s 2006 documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”

The report would come, Morano said, without an acknowledgement that warnings of “global warming” have given way to “climate change” as the scientific data has shown that the average global temperature has not risen for more than 15 years.

In a 2009 interview with the Bahai News Service in 2009, Pachauri that when “the IPCC’s fifth assessment comes out in 2013 or 2014, there will be a major revival of interest in action that has to be taken.”

“People are going to say, ‘My God, we are going to have to take action much faster than we had planned,’” he said.

Morano asked how Pachauri and other U.N. officials in 2009 or 2010 could possibly know what a “science” report in 2014 would say.

His answer was direct.

“The U.N. IPCC is a political body masquerading as a ‘science’ body,’” he charged. “The U.N.’s ‘science’ conclusions are agreed to line by line for its Summary for Policy Makers with politicians, U.N. officials and delegates.”"
As I look out my window and see there is still a lot of snow on the ground, I was so hoping they were correct. /sarc
