Where Is The Outcry?

Unlike the case with Fox News North (Sun TV News), when Canada's artsy-fartsy elites and the state broadcaster, with the help of American leftie organizations raised a big stink, trying to prevent it from ever going on air, it seems Huffington Post is setting up shop in Canada's cyberspace and being welcomed with open arms. Little wonder:
"On its first day, the site featured blog posts written by environmental activist David Suzuki, Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Victoria-raised, Oscar-nominated actress Meg Tilly."
Oh well. As we all know, the left is best known for its hypocrisy.

(I wonder if Arianna Huffington was caught having lunch with Margaret Atwood?)

Remember....

...the Prague Spring? Or the Hungarian Revolt?

How many more years after those rebellions did Eastern Europeans have to wait for communism to collapse? I'll tell you. Hungarians had to wait for nearly thirty years. The Czechs, twenty.

Well, there's two very interesting entries today in my favourite Middle Eastern blogs:

Syrian Protesters Burn Iranian, Russian, and Hezbollah Flags

Remember when those young people were protesting in the streets of Tehran a couple of years ago? They too were shouting "Down with Russia", not "Down with America". They and the Syrians know who their real enemies are.

And then there's the rantings of the Egyptian Sandmonkey: One Last Time

It's gonna happen, folks. Maybe not now, but some day, perhaps when the Sandmonkey is a lot older. The future belongs to the young and its leaders are emerging. Personally, I think Sandmonkey is this generation's answer to what Gamal Abdel Nasser was to the old guard Arab Nationalist movement that is now crumbling.

And while The One is no Ronald Reagan, he's changing his tune.

And the region's Islamofascists are very, very nervous. The cracks are showing.

I'll bet they were all, old guard, Islamist and young rebels alike, listening to Netanyahu's brilliant speech, which was obviously aimed at the young Arabs in the streets of Damascus and Cairo and their despotic overlords, as much as it was the American Congress and The One himself. Set aside 47 minutes, listen to it and see if you don't agree with me:

Complete Netanyahu History Making Speech to Congress May 24 2011 in HD

The Arabs may not have to wait as long as the Hungarians or the Czechs. And it may happen as quickly and as unexpectedly as the fall of the Berlin Wall. Especially if the youth are as wise as the Egyptian Sandmonkey. Just read what he says he wants in Egypt's constitution.

Joplin, MO Tornado - Deadliest...

...since 1953?

And what does that mean?
"The deadliest year for tornadoes in the U.S. was 1925, when 794 people were killed, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Yesterday’s Joplin twister is tied with a 1953 Flint, Michigan, tornado as the single deadliest in records going back to 1950."
[---]
"Sea surface temperatures in the Gulf are now 3 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the pre-1970 average..."
[---]
"“Two degrees of that can be attributed to natural variability while one degree Fahrenheit is associated with climate change,” said Trenberth in an interview today. “Some part of it is global warming-climate change and some part is natural variability.”"
Uh huh. "Natural variability" has a static upper and lower limit, I suppose and "global warming-climate change" isn't natural.
"Hayes, Schneider and Thomas Schwein, deputy director of the weather service’s central region, who was also on the conference call, weren’t ready to attribute the outbreaks to climate change.

“This is certainly a rich topic for research,” Schneider said.

Schneider said there is “emerging research” to suggest that years like 2011 in which a La Nina fades tend to produce more tornadoes.

More deadly tornadoes may develop tomorrow from Kansas to Texas, Schneider said.

“There are some very dense population areas,” Schneider said. “This is a very serious situation that is brewing.”"
Glad there's somebody with common sense weighing in on this. More people = more buildings = more death and destruction. Elementary, for most of us.

Sooo glad I don't live in tornado alley. I'll take a blizzard any day, as long as I'm home where it's cozy and warm.

Godspeed the people of Joplin, Missouri.

Which reminds me:

A Rose By Any Other Name

Obama would repeat bin Laden raid
"U.S. President Barack Obama says he would be prepared to launch another covert military raid into Pakistan similar to the mission that killed Osama bin Laden if a leading militant figure were found to be hiding in the country.

In an interview Sunday with the BBC before his state visit to Britain, Obama said his administration is "very respectful" of Pakistan's sovereignty, but added "our job is to secure the United States."

"We cannot allow someone who is planning to kill our people or our allies' people — we can't allow those kind of active plans to come to fruition without us taking some action," Obama told interviewer Andrew Marr."
Has a familiar ring to it, doesn't it?

What was it now? Oh yes:
"Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists. From this day forward, any nation that continues to harbor or support terrorism will be regarded by the United States as a hostile regime.

Our Nation has been put on notice: We are not immune from attack. We will take defensive measures against terrorism to protect Americans."
It's amazing how skilled The One is at channeling his predecessor, isn't it. He can see 2012 from his back yard.

Or maybe it was Hillary he was channeling:

What goes around, comes around. And I'm loving this.

You Don't Say!!

I hear there's a Canadian team in the Stanley Cup playoffs this year. I have no idea if it's the quarter finals or the semi-finals or the final finals. It's only the third week of May, after all.

Meh!

Basically, I began to lose interest when the league went through its big expansion into warm climates, ... and when Gretzky was traded to one of those warm places, that was it.

Question: Do Canadian prairie farm boys still play shinny? I'll bet there aren't enough boys left on farms to play a good game of shinny, - nor, for that matter, those road apple production machines, horses - so the frozen road apple puck is likely a thing of the past.

Ya, I'm old. I was sort of sad and happy at the same time when this happened, 'cause I still think Gordie Howe was the greatest of them all. I don't even know if Gretzky's record has been beaten, but far and away the best thing about both Howe and Gretzky was they were gentlemen on the ice. Their fame was earned through their skill at the game of hockey, not by beating people up, and via their gentlemanly behavior both on and off the rink, something that is far too rare in NHL hockey these days and is another reason why I lost interest in the game. /old fart

But I do remember being glued to the TV during the Canada - Russia hockey series - the year God was Canadian. That was our contribution to the defeat of the Soviet Union during the Cold War.  What a nail biter that one was. When the final goal was scored, it was one of the few occasions where I remember exactly where I was - in the doorway of the student lounge in the Education Building at the U of S.  The lounge, of course, was overflowing with screaming (class-skipping) students. Nyet! Nyet! Soviet!  Dah! Dah! Canada!

PS: But this was delicious:

Older bin Laden widows think younger wife tipped off US
"THE three widows of Osama bin Laden are turning on each other in custody, with two older Saudi women blaming a much younger Yemeni wife for leading American intelligence to their hideout.

"It's vicious," said a Pakistani official briefed on the interrogation of the widows. "The older wives think the younger one tipped off the Americans or was tracked when she came to join him."

The al-Qa'ida leader was living with three wives when he was killed in Abbottabad three weeks ago."
[---]
"Although the compound where bin Laden hid for five years was large, the three wives were all cooped up in the same house. The older two lived on the second floor and the youngest one on the top. Their husband alternated between them. Pakistani officials who have been debriefing the women portray life in the compound as an Islamic version of Desperate Housewives."
[---]
""The joke in Pakistan is that Bin Laden called in his location to CIA because he was being driven mad cooped up for five years with so many wives and children," said Rehman Malik, Pakistan's interior minister"

Jeeze, Just When You Thought...

...the global warming hysteria had been properly sedated, we have another volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Remember all that settled science stuff from last year at this time (yup, it's been just a little over a year since the last eruption)?

No?  Well here's a reminder:

Volcano not likely to slow global warming
"A vast cloud from an intensifying volcanic eruption in Iceland is too small so far to slow global warming as happened in 1991 with the explosion of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, experts say."
Iceland volcano unlikely to slow global warming
"Big volcanic eruptions have had a cooling effect on Earth's climate, but the Icelandic event is too small to provide any such respite from manmade global warming, scientists said on Friday.

The benchmark cooling event of the past 20 years was in 1991, when Mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines."
Well, like the Rapture, it was foretold, so it's gonna happen:

There's bigger trouble ahead from Icelandic volcanoes as the world heats up, scientists warn

Yet they share one larger thing in common: the deep, passionate commitment that the end is near. And when the end doesn't come, instead of relief, there is disappointment. Fundamentalist preachers and environmental prophets-of-doom react the same way every time: they d go back over their math, and offer new predictions for the end. The preachers end up with dwindling congregations and radio audiences; the green prophets get appointed science adviser to the president."
And The Jawa Report tells of having the shit scared out of him as a kid.

Everyone else seems to have ignored it, worrying instead about the real threat of apocalypse.

Being a History Buff...

...I have to say I hate this "could have", "should have", "would have" notion:

Britain could have 'crushed Germany within three years' if RAF had not REJECTED inventor's plans for world's first jet fighter
"The Allies would have crushed Nazi Germany 'within three years' if the RAF had not rejected plans by a British inventor to build the world's first jet-powered fighter planes, according to new research.

Inventor Sir Frank Whittle was told his designs for a 500mph jet were 'totally unrealistic' and RAF chiefs refused to invest a penny in their development.

It meant the RAF engineer was forced to circulate his patent internationally in the hope of finding a private investor.

But the document fell into enemy hands and was used as the blueprint for Germany's own jet development programme."
You can't rewind history based on hindsight. No one can know how things could have, should have or would have turned out if a different decision/tack had been taken. Every war is won or lost based on responses to initiatives of the enemy. If the allies had had better planes, who can know how the Axis would have responded?

So What's the Big Deal?

Harper names defeated Tories to the Senate

We all know senate appointees have always been cronies of the party which appoints them, but how many actually have had actual legislative experience? Personally, I'm looking forward to a senate that actually isn't composed of dead wood.

Besides that, Harper is a brilliant tactician. Do these particular appointments not play well into the eventual goal of reforming the Senate? Let's see whether the opposition parties now rally round the Senate reform agenda or if they oppose it. If history has anything to teach us, the answer to that is they will exercise their traditional hypocrisy. After all, it is only if the Liberal Party can stack the Senate with their cronies that it works for Canada, right?

CBC Searches Further Afield for Dreaded "Hidden Agenda"

Seriously. You can't make this stuff up.

Half-truths and hidden agendas in bin Laden narrative

"Narrative". That's one of leftydom's favourite code words. They speak the truth. Everyone else spins a "narrative", you know.
"When President Barack Obama gave the word to launch Operation Neptune Spear, the daring assault on Osama bin Laden's compound, there were actually two combined operations set in motion.

We've heard much about the first, the Navy SEALs' raid to eliminate bin Laden; almost nothing about the second.

The second was the use of what the White House and Pentagon call "Strategic Communications," a PR strategy to dominate the narrative of an event for broad political aims worldwide."
Oh, CBC. What would we do without you? We plebeians would never be able to figure that out. No siree.
"I'm not critical of the raid itself, which I believe was masterfully directed. But I do have concerns about the current trend toward what is being called the "operationalization of information."

As we saw when a number of false, or at best half-true, statements poured out of the White House in that first day of the bin Laden drama, we now must parse news statements from supposedly authoritative sources with ever greater care for hidden agendas.

Forget traditional government PR, this is a much more muscular doctrine to combine many pointed information flows into a very solid arm of U.S. policy."
Oh come on Brian. You're about the same age as I am. You know better than that. There's nothing new about governments putting spin on things, especially during times of war. What you're really upset about is that you have to work extra hard to get the evidence you need to support your "narrative". Too bad, so sad. The laugh is on you. CBC has become a joke.

For example:

Canada offered to aid Iraq invasion: WikiLeaks

This is news? I knew that years ago. Where were you, CBC? Maybe something like this would have been a better headline: "Wikileaks digs up old news: Yawn"

Or "Epic fail: CBC lets Wikileaks do their work for them".

Why are we giving CBC a billion+ $CDN a year?

I Ask You....

...are you surprised at this?

Losing indicators — 91% of Liberals, 90% of Bloc supporters, believe in global warming
"Only 6% of Liberals and 9% of Bloc supporters have read and heard that the Earth has not been getting warmer, and just 3% and 1%, respectively, aren’t sure.

Canada’s Conservatives have been exposed to different views: 64% have heard that Earth has been getting warmer and 28% that Earth has not. 8% of Conservatives aren’t sure.

In the U.S., where a much more diverse press more often exposes the public to sceptical views on global warming, more Republicans respond “No” than “Yes” (43 to 41, with 17% not sure). Democrats in the U.S., in contrast, predominantly have heard that Earth has been warming (69% to 16%, with 15% unsure)."
The study compared Canadian with American views and looked at political affiliation of those who believed or were skeptical of various aspects of the global warming hype. Sadly, Americans seems to have far more sense on this matter than Canadians do:
"Belief in climate change among Canadians substantially outpaces belief in this phenomenon among residents of the United States."
"Americans remain highly divided on claims that scientists are manipulating climate research for their own interests, with most Canadians rejecting such claims."
...but there's hope:
"Partisan affiliation is also associated with individual views on global warming in Canada, with Conservative Party supporters significantly less likely than supporters of all other parties to believe the Earth is warming."
Just so we're clear on this, they never asked me. I suspect they only interviewed residents of the Saanich-Gulf Islands Constituency and maybe the inner precincts of our largest cities.

Anyway, this study was done and published before our recent election and, ahem, look at what happened to the Libs and Bloqists - and the Cons.

So, bin Laden was Into Porn...

...and he was hiding in plain sight in Pakistan. Brings to mind this earlier entry. So what's Pakistan most upset about? That the Yanks violated their sovereign territory or that their predilection to watching smut has been plastered all over the international media?

And speaking of Pakistan, Lawrence Solomon writes an interesting article about the inter-ethnic tensions in Pakistan and their historical origins, which, luckily, I suppose, correspond to geographic regions (which is probably why they arose in the first place.)

Not much can be done about that, though, I would think, short of nuking the place, but they do have nukes, which are probably aimed at India and we need India on our side, or at least neutral.

Waiting for CBC to Report This

Canada on bin Laden's list of targets, again.
"The Sunday Telegraph has learned that Britain was one of six countries – along with the US, Canada, Israel, Germany and Spain – identified as a target for terror strikes in the intelligence haul. Officials did not disclose specific plots or threats."
h/t BCF

"As US and European domestic security officials step up counter-terror operations amid concerns of a "lone wolf" or terror cell revenge attacks to avenge bin Laden's killing, Pakistan's intelligence services have withdrawn co-operation with their American counterparts.

Agents with the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) directorate are refusing to share details of suspects or plots in protest at the US operation to kill bin Laden, raising the potential threat of attacks on Western cities
."

As I Sit Here Shivering....

...(they turned the boilers off in my apartment building about three weeks ago and it's bloody cold here today), there's startling news:

Sea levels are not rising.

Well okay. That's a lie. Sea levels have risen a full 0.83 inches since the turn of the century.
"The NASA-funded group claims glacial melt is removing weight that had been pressing down on land masses, which in turn is causing land mass to rise. This welcome news mitigates sea-level rise from melting glacial ice, meaning sea level will rise less than previously thought. However, it is very inconvenient for alarmist sea level predictions. Therefore, instead of reporting the amount by which sea level is rising in the real world, the Sea Level Research Group has begun adding 0.3 millimeters per year of fictitious sea level rise to “compensate” for rising land mass.

The extra 0.3 millimeters of fictitious sea level rise will add up to 1.2 inches over the course of the 21st century. While this is not monumental in and of itself, it will allow alarmists to paint a dramatically different picture of sea level rise than is occurring in the real world. For example, the current pace of 8 inches of sea level rise for the present century is essentially no different than the 7 inches of sea level rise that occurred last century. However, with an artificially enhanced 9.2 inches of sea level rise, alarmists can claim sea level is rising 31 percent faster than it did last century."
I'll betcha none of them predicted the deluge would actually occur in Manitoba, though. That's a long way from the sea.

Sorry, But I Have An Excuse

Blogger was offline for several hours and I couldn't get into the inner sanctum to post anything new. Today, now that it's back up, I've got too much on my plate to do much blogging and it will probably stay that way for the next couple of weeks or more, so, find something else to do, fer Christ sake. Spring has sprung. Enjoy it while it lasts.

One thing I am following is the stunning confessions and Mia Culpas coming from the media about their favourite political party, the Libs. They really do believe the Libs have suffered a near fatal blow. What they haven't quite admitted yet, though, is that the nearly fatal blow has hit them, too, so it will be interesting to watch as they assume the fetal position.

Oh. And this is pretty funny:

Extensive Porn Stash Reportedly Found in Bin Laden Compound

Whether it's true or not, who knows or cares. If it is true, it's hilarious. All those wives, but he still needs porn. Hah!!

If it isn't, then it must be a plot by those evil Americans to embarrass the mighty hero. Might backfire, though. I can imagine there would be a lot of frustrated young Muslim males who might want to sign up just so they can watch porn, especially since there's a shortage of eligible women, given all the polygyny so prevalent in the Muslim world

PS: Speaking of the Liberal media, read this bit from the Globe and Mail and the comments. This particular liberal media organ is not getting the sort of response it had hoped for, me thinks.

And here's a whole bunch more. It's truly amazing how arrogant the Liberals remain. Without swallowing a good dose of humble pie, I don't think the Liberals have a hope in you know where of surviving. Take this, for example, from The Star:
"A Liberal Canada is where fairness, equality of opportunity, tolerance, and social justice are fundamental values. It is a Canada that is a moderate, reasonable and respected voice in the world."
And the Conservatives are not, I suppose. Perhaps the author could explain to me how the fair and tolerant Liberal Party gave us our draconian human rights commissions and how the doctrine of political correctness was allowed to flourish under its watch?

One of the biggest problems the Liberals have is, having constructed a narrative based on lies, they proceeded to believe the narrative and have gone so far as to live entirely in a falsely constituted fairytale about their own place in the body politic and about conservatives.

Not even falling to third place has awakened them. It will be interesting to see if they can pull themselves out of their fairytale world. I doubt if they will. There aren't enough humble-berries to make enough humble pies.

And besides, even if they manage to reinvent themselves, their current legacy represents all that is wrong with contemporary Canadian society. Quite simply, in the process of reinvention, the capital L liberal brand will have to cease to exist. But they show no signs of accepting that reality. Who would? Goodbye Libs.

PPS: The media is already dredging up the old tactics.  Pssst, folks. It didn't work last time. What makes you think it will work now? Political correctness is dead. Don't you get it? Sheesh, you people are dense.

Proving Once Again....

...how out of touch with reality academe can really be...

Harvard shocked by Canada’s rejection of Ignatieff
"Boston’s chattering classes are struggling with the stunning political defeat of one of Harvard’s most popular academics at the hands of Canadian voters, painting Michael Ignatieff’s historic loss as Liberal leader as a new low in Canadian politics.

A series of editorials and articles published this week in the Harvard Crimson, Boston Globe and elsewhere have blamed Canadians for being close-minded and anti-American when they handed Mr. Ignatieff and the Liberals the party’s worst defeat in history."
or maybe it's just Boston:
"“Harvard sees itself as the centre of the universe, so I’m sure it felt it very deeply,” said Graham Wilson, chair of Boston University’s department of political science."
It's pathetic. Even the excuses given miss the mark:
"In a front page article, The Boston Globe said the main reason for the Liberal collapse was that Mr. Ignatieff — the former director Harvard’s Carr Center of Human Rights Policy and an expert on international military interventions — had views on the Canadian mission in Afghanistan that had pushed “war-weary voters toward the more left-leaning New Democratic Party.”

The paper’s editorialists noted with some disbelief that Canadian politics had become “surprisingly caustic” and described the “sadness and indignation” his former Harvard colleagues felt at seeing that Conservative attack ads painting Mr. Ignatieff as a foreign Ivy League elitist had played so well with Canadian voters."
Look, people, Western Canada, the most America-friendly part of the country, always rejects Liberals. It was the Liberal Party of Canada that decided to parachute Iggy into the leadership position, by-passing the wishes of the rank and file membership. That sort of hubris doesn't go well in most of Canada, never mind just Western Canada.

And besides, Iggy was out of touch with Canada's political landscape. It doesn't matter what country he had been in, he wasn't here and there are numerous niggling little details of which he was obviously ignorant that would have translated into disaster for Canada had he been Prime Minister.

We tend not elect parties based on their foreign policy stance.  We're more concerned with bread and butter issues right here at home, and we wanted someone who deeply and intimately understands what those are.  All politics is local, right?

And - and this is a big one - I really think the Liberal Party is over. It is elitist. People of the Liberal persuasion have been preaching to us and looking down their snobbish noses at us for decades and we're sick of being treated like plebeians. So we banished them. Hopefully for good.

Oh, and we take great delight in the internal melt-down, squabbling and finger pointing in the Liberal ranks taking place now, as if to say, "how could this possibly have happened". Kinda proves our point.

Oh. And does this not also say something about the attitude so prevalent amongst liberal arts faculties in North American universities?  Time for an overhaul in that arena, as well.

Perhaps the Boston Globe and the Harvard Illuminati can just dismiss this as Canada's version of the Tea Party movement.

PS: American Thinker has taken note. The smirking is palpable.

Hoop and Holler!

I lived in Brandon, Manitoba, years and years ago, a small prairie city through which flows the now swollen Assiniboine River.  What a lot of water!! As I mentioned in a previous entry, the river I grew up beside, the Qu'Appelle, drains into the Assiniboine, so I guess all that water in the picture in this entry is making its way to Lake Winnipeg, causing some havoc along the way.

It appears the Province of Manitoba will have to deliberately flood some areas where there are homes and businesses in order to save still others. Of course, there are whiners talking about suing the government for what is essentially an act of God. What a bunch of jerks!

Anyway, I did not know there was a place in Manitoba called Hoop and Holler. I like.  That's where the powers that be are planning to cut a hole in the dike to facilitate a diversion of the deluge.

I was out of town today. Took a quick trip into Saskatoon. On the way back there was a big caravan of military vehicles heading in a south-east direction along the Yellowhead Highway, which joins the #1 just west of Portage la Prairie, not far from all this water.  I suspect they were from Edmonton, as it's been reported on the news that a detachment from Edmonton is on its way to Manitoba to help with the flood control and evacuation.  Godspeed, fellas and gals.

Hoop and holler while you're filling those sandbags and don't take any guff from idiots who would like to turn a massive natural disaster into an opportunity to sue somebody, rather than appreciate what's being done for them.

Previous stuff about floods in Manitoba - Lake Agassiz's revenge.

What You Might Not Have Known...

...about the recent election:
  • Marxist-Leninist Party is more popular than the Communists but they both suck (The M-L Party garnering 0.06901% versus the Communists' 0.01987% of the popular vote)
  • The Christian Heritage Party garnered more votes than both commie parties put together (0.13055%)
  • The Rhinoceros Party lives on, nosing out the Pirate Party by a narrow margin and the Radical Marijuana Party by almost two to one.  Do we have our priorities right, or what!
  • If the Animal Alliance/Environment Party had joined forces with their natural allies, the Rhinoceros Party, and had the both of them thrown their people behind the Greens, the Greens would have garnered 3.98% of the popular vote instead of 3.9%. Or we could round it off to make it look really good at 4% of the popular vote, but it still probably wouldn't be enough to get invited to the big televised debate next time around.
To carry on, even if you put the two commie parties in with the Greens, their standing would still be only 4.003% of the popular vote. Somehow, I don't think listening to Lizzie May (or whoever is leading the party four or five years from now) debate the big guys would persuade enough Canucks to put them at 4.1% or 4.2% or 4.3% or even put them at 4.004% or 4.005% or 4.006%.  Do you?

I guess this explains why so many Greenie Babies don't like the first-past-the-post system.  They want to get what they otherwise haven't got a snowball's chance in hell of earning.

Another Posting In Which Gramma Execises Her Bragging Rights

Top: Logan loves Mommy. Mommy loves Logan, especially when he's clean.  But not when he's colicky, which, apparently, is 18 hours a day these days.  Oh well. This, too, shall pass.

Middle: Cassidy and baby brother (Sumo Wrestler).

Bottom: Gramma's little Sumo Wrestler, Kaden, laying on his surf board being cool.

At three months, Sumo Wrestler is already 19 pounds.  Big sister better learn to treat him well, if she knows what's good for her.
